Abstract: Sixteen years after the recognition of sanitation as a distinct human right, only a handful of States have recognized it in domestic legislation, and its realization is lagging behind in practice. In this, his last report, on the eve of the 2026 United Nations Water Conference to Accelerate the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 6 and the review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Special Rapporteur on the human rights to safe drinking water and sanitation, Pedro Arrojo Agudo, issues a call for renewed commitment to the universal realization of the human right to sanitation for all. The report highlights the need to place human rights principles at the centre of sanitation policies and investments.
